A collection of random, messy, personal thoughts and links, accumulated since 1999 by Joelle Nebbe-Mornod aka Iphigenie aka Superiphi, old style netizen, reader, walker, photographer, web innovation architect, and constantly curious mind
List of social sites and services I have signed up with, complete with links, short uninformed comments, and related articles. I am ashamed at the length of this list, and that so many are pretty much dormant and have been for years in some cases. If you use and enjoy some of the sites I barely tried, do connect with me and share the value of the site with me.
This is still under construction, there are more to add still.
Most social sites only show their value after you put effort into using them a while, connecting with people. For all of them there is a threshold of involvement which needs to be reached before you really can assess the site. Clearly it is a challenge for the owners of the site to put enough incentive and reward in the way the site is designed that people gradually get pulled into it - but this is easier said than done. For many of those sites I have not put that effort, just signed up to have a peek and left them dormant. It is easy to pass by the value by just being in the wrong mood or not finding the people which you ought to connect with. When we say we don't "get" a site it is usually that the site failed to lure us into putting the effort - that is certainly how you should understand it when I say it.
one-photo-a-day photo blog. Focused on learning and sharing rather than photo perfection. I am nearing 200 updates having started in April!
Probably my favorite bookmark manager, and I tried a dozen. Fairly easy to use, works in opera, social annotations, and keeps a copy of the page (which spurl used to do but stopped)
Great image sharing community - not the slickest looking but very easy to use
one of my main places of activity at the moment, especially since FOWA
book cataloguing. Paid member for 2 years now, 1500 books catalogues. low interaction but I have started swapping occasional messages and recommendations.
a backup/sync of my bookmarks, when opera sync did not exist. Ugly but feature rich.
Business networking, a site that keeps improving
kind of a network of bloggers, I dont consider myself a blogger but find some of their aggregation and discovery ideas worth following
Fully admit I didnt use twitter until this year - its main value is the number of people on it. Very simple and everyone integrates with it.
Small startup in photo sharing - some nice touches, and very accessible. Suffers from small community size
signed up to keep up to date with 1 or 2 people, plus some online services. Not really using it.
around science fiction
1 line reviews of books/films/games. Since I often do the 1 line review thing here (mostly cause if I start writing a real review, my temperament means it will a complete and well documented thing - with me it is 5 minutes or 5 days, no in between), suits me quite well. But I am unsure of the benefit, it will depend on who you can connect with I guess.
location based microblogging - very limited uptake around my location so I havent seen much benefit so far. Waiting to see.
community around eating out - signed up, not used much.
openid, validated identities, and it warns me if my key pages go offline. Note that I also have openid via several other services, livejournal for example.
another bookmarking service - dont like it as much as spurl or diigo, less easy to manage. Use it because everyone integrates with it.
art & skinning community. Just a passive member as I could not produce anything this community would rate, I dont think.
mostly a site to list, like here, all sites. At least that is my understanding from testing. Hints of recommendation and site discovery
news voting/sharing - I just don’t get it, doing anything on there seems like a drop in the water, and it doesn’t offer me anything of interest, in that I either have already seen the link in question through my other sites, or am totally uninterested in it. Seems highly susceptible to link baiting.
where am I and where will I be. Travel based tracking - used it this summer when I was not 1 week in the same place in a row for 3 months. Unsure of the benefits unless everyone knows to look there.
social news site for techies and developers
music downloads subscription, member on and off since 2000. Stop subscribing when the fact that they dont roll over unused downloads annoys me, then I come back cause I miss the music discovery
finds local events - not sure what else. Can’t see what activity i might have on it, but might keep it for the email newsletters
bored of all the noise and apps, and there’s so little place for content. But some real people use it
free option barely of any value. not enough to trust upgrade would have value
Put a few recipes up on this one, nice and simple and accessible. Sticking around for now.
Open Source Governance for the Enterprise
signed up and not really tried - I heard it has a lot of potential but I never connected with anyone interesting or any group that would make me really dive into it.
an alternate view to the twitter and friendfeed feeds.account keeps disappearing. Never mind
must make the effort for that one, it’s uk based and about sharing knowledge. I like the idea.
lifestream aggregator based on open source framework noserub
old style site with some profiles / forum / networking - a near complete list of all my games there. Included for completeness.
I also have a google id, but am using the lj one for jabber the rare times i need it (usually for integration with services, i have no friends on it)
games site with a social element and irc rooms
joined in 2006, but really only using it from this summer. Integrates with my music player.
Another lifestream site. I like their presentation, especially around photos
using lj for the more introspective / rambling daily journal, except it’s anything but daily.
to keep in touch with people
signed up and not used. The effort to start with these social news sites just puts me off. I fear they are wasted on me.
“Pearltrees lets you keep at hand the web pages you like, discover some new ones in your areas of interest and share them easily with your friends.”
I joined photo.net after enjoying the Philip & Alex book so much. Been a member for a very long time, don’t participate much as I don’t think I can hold a candle to the pros out there. Worth following though
Webapp to upload photos to multiple sites at once. Quite handy.
business oriented social network - hasn’t yet shown any advantage over linkedin
timeline microblogging with some aggregation. Looks nice - but I haven’t used it much.
another lifestream option with a different mix of sites (LOTS). Very detailed and organised
submit/vote news aggregator a bit like digg but different bias. I sometimes find things there.
nobody in the uk…
aggregator site with a learning/organising angle.
social bookmarking service - i didnt know anyone and didnt see features that were different, so not using it anymore. Nice personality as a site, though.
been a member since 2000, cant be bothered to sift through the mess
mobile photo blogging - i’m just not that mobile
social news site - strong american focus at the moment.
another aggregator aimed more at the “central profile” angle, from what i could see. Seems to be having teethings problems.
Used to be my favorite bm manager - very easy to manage, and worked well in opera. pre-tags your bookmarks if the site is already known, which lazy people like me like. Takes a screenshot, and used to keep copies of the files. Delicious integration, and offers XBEL export.
Suffered from spammer abuse so features locked down now. Shame.
aggregation & discovery, with a semantic web flavor
Dana made me do it! Social discovery bookmarking and marketing tool delivering 1000 page impressions minimum to just about any old page. I find it too full of junk as a result, but it could come from not having connected with anyone. Will give it more time one day, but since it wont work on my browsers I can’t be bothered
customised aggregator/lifestream. Seems down.
same as digg, gather, newsvine - cant seem to get myself to put the time in.
a bookmarking/sharing tool with a semantic angle - although in my early tests i didnt notice much. Yes, it can match a keyword search to groups, but it doesnt seem to organise data - people still create groups. So it’s another pyramid rush site, get in early and claim the good terms to build your rep. I was a bit disappointed that it didnt organise things around terms and concepts organically instead of having the usual user-created groups. But then that would be a lot to ask.
comment system for websites - might install it here
code and tickets
Social entrepreneurship - another one I havent yet looked at
marking all tech events I might want to go to
totally forgotten about, and cancelled
nice blogging platform, I just dont need a blog.
Had been a member since 2000 but not used it much (the design is loud). Until last year I realised I had a quota of 10000 photos, so started using it for the family photo sharing. Aimed at the mainstream.
signed up, never really used it. Same goes for wordpress direct. Too many ideas, too little time.
alternative to diigo/spurl/linkagogo which i dont use much. Management of bookmarks and categories is a bit of a pain, they are adding drag and drop so that will improve. Does offer the option to keep a save of the page, which is a great feature but I have this on diigo (and had it on spurl). Keeping an eye on it as an option.
to keep in touch with friends
I tend to read faster than I can watch a video, so only visit youtube occasionally - and usually to watch a speech/conference/tutorial, rather than a fun thing. I know how dangerous it can be. Most use so far was for dog training information. Not produced any video or left many comments, so not an active user.
